New Delhi: Who doesn't love eating momos, you cannot just stop eating at one. Momo stalls are found aplenty all over cities and towns, profiting from the unique taste and delicious condiments it is served with.


But despite being steamed and full of vegetables and meat, are these snacks healthy? Experts say momos do more harm than good.


Made with refined flour, and often added with harmful chemicals like Azodicarbonamide, Chlorine gas, Benzoyl Peroxide, and other bleaches, momos not only contribute to weight gain, obesity, and spike in blood sugar levels but also damage the pancreas.


Side effects of eating momos


Like any other junk food, momos are highly addictive, and available in various varieties attracting teenagers and young adults, who regularly consume them to satiate their mid-meal cravings.


Containing Monosodium Glutamate or MSG, the dumplings, according to health experts, are linked to health issues like problems in metabolism and can even harm your reproductive organs and nerves.


MSG, rich in Sodium and glutamic acid, causes a lot of blood pressure and kidney problems.

Digestion issues


Since the shell covering of the momos is made with refined flour or maida, regularly consuming them can lead to digestion issues, like constipation, acidity, and bloating.


Cabbage contains tapeworms


Mostly, the vegetarian momos contain a generous helping of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, which if not cooked properly, can contain spores of tapeworm.


These worms are extremely dangerous and can reach the brain and lead to life-threatening conditions.


Heart problems


Not only do the chemicals in the filling cause high blood pressure but can also lead to other cardiovascular problems. Momos have a high sodium content which contributes to hypertension.


Obesity


Since momos are not just steamed but also deep fried, regular consumption can lead to unhealthy weight gain or even obesity, which then increases the risk of diseases like type-2 diabetes.


Fried momos with mayonnaise are presently in high trend which contain very high amounts of unsaturated fats and oil.


Allergies


Chemicals are in abundance in momos and many people get allergic reactions, including rashes in the skin or irritable bowel syndrome in the stomach. People who are allergic to gluten can also find themselves in life-threatening situations by regularly consuming momos.


Cancer


According to studies, Ajinomoto MSG and other food additives and preservatives found in momos can be carcinogenic, leading to cancer.


Piles


The accompaniments used with momos - the delicious red chutney made with tomatoes, garlic, and hot red chilis are super unhealthy. For those consuming too much spicy foods, it can also cause bleeding hemorrhoids or piles.
